Mahasweta Devi, Habib Tanvir new Research Professors

NEW DELHI:
Writer Mahasweta Devi and theatre personality Habib Tanvir have been appointed National Research Professors in recognition of their unique contributions to literature and the stage respectively.
They have been chosen by a committee comprising Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and the Union Ministers for Human Resource Development, Finance and Home.

With this, Ms. Devi and Mr. Tanvir join an elite league that includes Nobel laureate C.V. Raman, filmmaker Satyajit Ray, shehnai maestro Bismillah Khan and sitar maestro Ravi Shankar. Recently, renowned cardiac surgeon M.S. Valiathan was appointed a National Research Professor.
The scheme was instituted in 1949 to honour distinguished academics and scholars for their valuable contribution to knowledge. Persons of "real eminence" above the age of 65 who are regarded as still capable of further productive research are eligible for this award.
