A BURNING ISSUE: Left party workers burning an effigy of US President Goerge Bush in Ongole on Thursday.
ONGOLE: Left parties organised a rally here on Thursday to protest against the visit of US President George Bush and burnt his effigy near the Church centre. The rally started from Kurnool road and reached Church centre through Addanki bus stand, market centre and trunk road. The activists raised slogans like "Bush go back," "Homicidal Bush down down," "We want peace," etc. CPI district secretary M. Venkaiah and CPI(M) district secretary Jala Anjaiah said that they opposed Bush's visit because the Indian Government proposed signing defence deals, endangering the sovereignty of the country. They said that America, which had piled up nuclear weapons, had no right to control the nuclear programmes of India, Iran, Iraq and Korea.
UPA regime flayed
Saying that a large number of people were killed in Afghanistan and Iraq or denied food and medical facilities, they dubbed Mr. Bush as the `biggest terrorist of the world.' They criticised the UPA Government for inviting Mr. Bush to India and making several agreements with him. Democratic Youth Federation of India district secretary P. Venkata Rao said that unemployment had increased to 20 per cent in America and various polls indicated that 68 per cent of people opposed Bush and his policies. The Indian Government bowed to pressure from the US and allowed foreign direct investment even in retail sector which provided employment to four crore youth, the DYFI leader said. He said that the independence won with the sacrifices made by Bhagat Singh, Chandrasekhar Azad and others was being bartered away to the US. He called upon the youth to express their resentment and stall such decisions.
