Prisoner commits suicide in jail

MYSORE: A prisoner in K.R. Nagar prison here allegedly committed suicide by hanging on Wednesday. The prisoner, Prasanna, hailed from Hosapenjahalli in Hunsur taluk and had been charged with murder.

Prasanna was the prime accused in the murder of a girl in a lodge in Hunsur some months ago. Police suspect that Prasanna hanged himself because of depression. Senior police officers visited the prison, and an investigating has been ordered. — Special Correspondent

Defamation case against Dharam Singh

BANGALORE: A defamation case has been filed against the former Chief Minister N. Dharam Singh in a court here for allegedly having made derogatory remarks against the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in an interview to a news weekly.

The case has been filed before the 8th Additional City Metropolitan Magistrate. According to the complaint, Mr. Dharam Singh had alleged that the RSS is responsible for the demolition of the Kanaka Gopura of the Krishna Temple/Math in Udupi.

PWD submits building plan

BANGALORE: The Public Works Department (PWD) has submitted to the Karnataka High Court a revised blueprint containing the drawings for the circuit Bench building to be set up in Dharwad. Work is expected to begin once the High Court approves the revised plan.

Dharwad Bar Association President B.D. Hiremath met Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy and Law Minister Basavaraj Horatti seeking adequate budgetary allocation for establishing the two Circuit Benches in Dharwad and Gulbarga.

HAL receives award for export performance

Bangalore: Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. has again received the Engineering Export Promotion Council South Region Top Exporters trophy and award for 2003-04. The award recognises outstanding export performance every year. HAL has been the top exporter in the category of "Engineering Consultancy, Technical Know-how and Other Engineering Services" in the region for more than a decade.

HAL Chairman Ashok K. Baweja received the award here from Governor T.N. Chaturvedi. The export performance of HAL touched Rs. 215.35 crores. — Special Correspondent

New record in handling iron ore fines

MANGALORE: The New Mangalore Port (NMP) handled 32,499 tonnes of iron ore fines on February 28, which is a record, according to S. Gopalakrishna, Traffic Manager, NMP Trust.

The earlier record was handling of 28,391 tonnes of iron ore fines on February 15. The port has so far handled five million tonnes of iron ore fines in this financial year.

MP, MLA acquitted of charge

BIJAPUR: The Judicial Magistrate First Class court on Thursday acquitted Bijapur MP and former Union Minister of State for Railways Basanagouda R. Patil Yatnal and Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri, Ankola MLA, of the charge of instigating violence during the 1995 agitation for a broad-gauge line.

Mr. Yatnal and Mr. Kageri took part in a rail-roko agitation at Bijapur Railway Station where a mob set a train compartment on fire.

Analysis of indirect tax proposals

Bangalore: A technical analysis of the indirect tax proposals of the Union Budget for 2006-07 was presented by senior Supreme Court advocate V. Lakshmikumaran at an event organised by the Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry here on Thursday.

Chief Commissioner of Central Excise K.S. Nair, delivering the inaugural address, called the budget "practical and revenue generating." However, it is too early to say what effects the Budget will have on his department, he said. — Staff Reporter

Annual day

MYSORE: The Regional Institute of Education here will celebrate its Annual Day on Friday at 5.30 p.m. Chidananda Gowda, former Vice-Chancellor, Kuvempu University, will be the chief guest and G. Ravindra, principal of the institute will preside. An exhibition of teaching aids will be organised in the technology block of the institute on Friday and Saturday. It will comprise aids related to physical science, biological science, mathematics and social sciences. It will be open between 9.30 a.m. and 3.30 p.m. on Friday and between 9.30 a.m. and 1.30 p.m. on Saturday and is open to all. - Special Correspondent

Protest

MYSORE: Members of the Hindu Janjagruthi Samithi staged a protest in the city on Thursday against what they termed M.F. Hussain's offensive depiction of "Bharat Mata", and Hindu gods and goddesses. The activists raised slogans against the artist and submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner. They sought action against the artist and also a ban on his work. They urged the Government to withdraw the Padma awards conferred on Mr. Hussain. - Special Correspondent
