Thanjavur beats Villupuram

CHENNAI: Thanjavur beat Villupuram by 54 runs in the S.S. Rajan Trophy inter-district tournament first round match here.

The scores:

Thanjavur DCA 164 in 44.3 overs bt Villupuram 110 in 34.4 overs (Shayam Sunder four for 19).

Tiruvannamalai 218 for seven in 50 overs (Sabari 66, Rajesh 59 not out) bt Nagapattinam 170 in 48.4 overs (Murali four for 98).

Noorul Riaz's 86 helped Madurai defeat Kanyakumari by 91 runs and enter the quarterfinals at Dindigul.

In another match, B. Gopi's 75 helped host Dindigul defeat Namakkal by five wickets and enter the quarterfinals.

The scores: Madurai 288 for six in 50 overs (Selvam 40, Noorul Riaz 86, D.Jaisankar 42, Subramania Siva 53) bt Kanyakumari 197 in 43.2 overs (Suresh 40); Namakkal 195 in 47.5 overs (V.Suresh Kumar 75, R.Gokul four for 28) lost to Dindigul 196 for five in 45.1 overs (M.S. Muthu Vivekanand 47, B. Gopi 75); Coimbatore DCA 173 in 37.4 overs lost to Erode DCA 178 for seven in 38.2 overs (Murugesan 46, S. Nithyanandam 44 n.o.); Kancheepuram DCA 166 in 49.1 overs bt Salem DCA 91 in 25.4 overs (D. Santhosh Kumar 40 n.o.).

St. Joseph's dominates

St. Joseph's Engineering College, Chennai emerged the most successful college by bagging four men's titles in 24th Tamil Nadu Inter-Engineering (TIES-2006) sports meet organised by Arulmigu Kalasalingam College of Engineering at Krishnan Koil near here.

St. Joseph's, which bagged the badminton and ball badminton titles on Tuesday, also won the volleyball and kabaddi titles on Thursday.

Athiyaman College of Engineering, Hosur, won the football title by defeating Karunya Institute of Technology, Coimbatore 1-0 in the final while Sethu Institute of Technology, Kariapatti won the basketball title, defeating St.Joseph's, Chennai 62-61 in a thrilling match.

Volleyball: St. Joseph's bt Rajalakshmi Engineering College 26-24, 27-25.

Kabaddi: St. Joseph's bt S.S.M. College of Engineering 47-46.

Basketball: Sethu Institute of Technology 62 (Muthukumar 24, Antony Arul Selvaraj 13) bt St. Joseph's 61 (Nikil Sunny 14, Prince 10).

Arun stars in Vellore's win

A fine all-round performance by K.B. Arun Karthick enabled Vellore defeat Tirunelveli by nine wickets in Ranipet (Vellore).

In the other match held at the BHEL grounds, Tiruchi defeated Pondicherry by 104 runs.

The scores: Tirunelveli 100 in 40.2 overs (K.B. Arun Karthick four for 18, R. Rajesh four for 20) lost to Vellore 101 for one in 9.1 overs (K.B. Arun Karthick 76 not out).

Tiruchi 310 for eight in 50 overs (M.R. Muthupandi 56, R. Dharshan 55 not out, D. Surendradas 52) bt Pondicherry 206 in 45.1 overs (C. Shanmugaraja 48, R. Thangasamy 37, R. Satheesh three for 38).

Arjun triumphs

At Tiruchy,TKS Arjun scored 5.5 points out of a possible 6 and won the title in the under-11 category in the Friends of Police Chess tournament conducted by Tiruchi District Police here.

Prakash nets hat-trick

At Neyveli, Prakash scored a hat-trick as Madurai defeated Tuticorin 3-0 and qualified for the semifinals in the 47th senior State football championship at the Bharathi Stadium on Thursday. In another match, two goals by Jagan helped Chennai defeat Thanjavur 5-1. Venkatesan, Auxino and Kousigan were the other scorers. Ilamurugan was the lone scorer for Thanjavur. Earlier, Tiruchi thrashed Cuddalore 5-1 and qualified for the finals.

Salem beats Tirunelveli

In Pudukottai, Salem defeated Tirunelveli 2-1 and qualified for the quarterfinals of the 15th State Youth Football Championship on Thursday.

At half time Salem was leading 1-0, thanks to Vignesh's goal. Two minutes into the second half Dhanapal increased the lead. Ramkumar scored the consolation goal for Tirunelveli.

In the other pre-quarterfinal matches, Dindigul defeated Kancheepuram 5-4 via tiebreaker, while Vimal's goal helped Coimbatore defeat Madurai 1-0.

Sridharan nets winner

In Tiruchi, Sridharan scored in the Globe FC's 1-0 win over Josephites in the Tiruchi district Football Association first division league match on Thursday. In the other encounter, Southern Railway and P&T Durai played a goalless draw.

Athletics meet
