CHENNAI: The Madras High Court on Thursday granted anticipatory bail to R.V. Janakiraman, former Chief Minister of Pondicherry, in connection with a complaint preferred by an election official. Justice K.N. Basha granted bail to the former Chief Minister and his son, R.V.J. Chandresh Kumar, who were accused of interfering with the official duty of poll officials finalising electoral rolls for four assembly constituencies on February 28. According to the Oulgarate Tahsildar, B. Thillaivel, who is also the assistant electoral registration officer, a group of over 50 Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) cadres, including Mr. Janakiraman and his son, picked up a quarrel with poll officials claiming that they had failed to consider the claims for inclusion of persons who had submitted applications during revision. Not convinced by the explanations offered by the authorities, the group prevented them from performing election-related duties and took away the register of complaints, lists pertaining to the location of polling stations, public petitions and electoral rolls meant to be displayed. The materials were returned to officials only in the evening, the complaint lodged with the local police said. They have been charged with committing offences such as theft, disturbing public tranquillity and deterring public servants from discharging their duties.
