KURNOOL: Secretary of All-India Defence Canteen Employees Union John Peter said the high-level meeting, represented by Union Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee, has in principle agreed to concede the demands of the defence canteen employees.

In a statement, he said the high-level meeting took place in New Delhi on February 22 between the union leaders led by Debadas Biswas of Forward Block, D. Raja of CPI, Rajasekharan, union president, T.S. Chawan, general secretary and the defence side was represented by Pranab Mukherjee, Sekhar Dutt, defence Secretary and A.S. Mr. Peter explained that the defence canteens had an annual turnover of Rs. 4,794 crores with a profit of Rs. 455 crores.

The canteen employees numbering about 5,000 serve over 13 lakh defence employees and retired men. Out of 3,800 canteens, only 355 were run by civilian staff while the rest was managed by men in uniform.

He said the civilian employees were not treated as Government employees and only basic pay was paid as wages without DA and other allowances.

Even if they were considered for full pay and allowances, the financial burden would be not more than Rs. 43.5 crores.
