ANANTAPUR: A reserve Sub Inspector of Police allegedly attempted to rape a widow at Obuladevara Cheruvu in the district late on Wednesday night. The police registered a case against him based on a complaint lodged by the woman. According to the information reaching here and the police, RSI Sambasiva Rao went to the house of the widow in the night and attempted to rape her. He even pushed aside her two-year-old son when he tried to reach her out crying. The police officer fled from the scene after the woman raised an alarm. In her complaint to the police, she stated that the RSI was drunk and abused her. Meanwhile, CPI (M) activists staged a dharna in front of the police station and a rasta roko on the Kadiri-Hindupur road for more than two hours. Vehicular traffic on the road was disrupted due to the protest. They demanded immediate suspension of the RSI and stern action against him. They called off the protest after an assurance from Kadiri DSP K. Subramanyam and Obuladevara Cheruvu SI Ravindranath Reddy that a case would be registered against the RSI.
