KOCHI: The tenth Cochin Motor Show got underway at the Rajiv Gandhi Indoor Stadium, Kadavanthra, on Thursday. The show will be on till Sunday. The turnout this year is better than last year's with more dealers putting up stalls. Vikram, an autorickshaw manufacturer, too is participating. But what steals the show is an array of value-additions like car-care products, sunroofs, audio and video systems and burglar alarms.

The car models on display include Cedia, the latest from the stable of Mitsubishi Lancer. Curiously, many visitors were seen checking out Ambassador Grand. Biju Simon, a sales executive, said that it is as powerful as any of the new-generation cars.

"The Grand comes with a 2000-cc Isuzu engine and Isuzu gear box. The other value-additions which come built-in are power steering, power brake, power window, central-locking system, CD player, split AC and arctic leather seat. Shifting gears too has been made easy. All these come for Rs.4.92 lakhs (showroom price). Just like milky white, the magic black colour (which has a dark-green tinge), too is gaining popularity. The body has been pieced together using computer punching and dipped in boiler primer," he said.

While the conventional Ambassador is still preferred by tour companies, families and VIPs prefer to journey in Grand. The Geo Motors showroom at Thykoodam has been selling an average of 35 Ambassador every month. While Nippon Toyota has displayed the popular Innova, Popular Hyundai has put on show a wide range of cars from the Hyundai stable. Tata Motors too has put up a stall.

Cochin TVS has displayed its latest Apache bike. It has been priced Rs. 52,490 (showroom price) and has gas suspension. LML Beamer and Bajaj Avenger are the other attractions at the show.

An attraction at the show is an eco-friendly electric bike, called Flexibike. It looks like a bicycle. Jaison Kodiyan, a promoter of the vehicle, says that the front-wheel drive, 17-cc two-wheeler can run 80 km after every electric recharge. It has been priced Rs.15,490 and carries a five-year guarantee.

"The bike has been assembled by handicapped persons. It is ideal for short-distance travel, on university campuses, eco-friendly resorts and so on. The Delhi University has placed an order for 1000 such bikes. The vehicle has a unique boost-circuit to assist in climbing steep slopes," he said. With parking in crowded lots becoming a problem, one company has come up with parking sensor. It orally warns the driver of the distance at the rear between the car and any obstacle.
