Members stage a `rasta roko' at Millaghatta

EXPRESSING THEIR DEMANDS: Members of the Jana Jagruthi Horata Samithi staged a rasta roko in Shimoga on Thursday demanding the reconstruction of an old and weak bridge over the Tunga canal at Tippu Nagar.

SHIMOGA: Members of the Jana Jagruthi Horata Samithi staged a rasta roko here on Thursday and demanded reconstruction of an old and dilapidated bridge over the Tunga channel at Millaghatta.

They also demanded the reconstruction of bridges over the Tunga channels near Lakshmi talkies and Shanti Nagar as they have become weak.

Traffic was affected for sometime at Millaghatta because of the demonstration.

In a memorandum submitted to the Deputy Commissioner, they said work on these bridges has not been taken up even after the approval of the Chief Engineer of the Upper Tunga Project in 2003. They said reconstruction of these bridges is needed as there is heavy vehicular movement on them.

Officials concerned will be held responsible if there is an accident owing to the collapse of the bridges, they added.
