CHENNAI: A two-day workshop on `Grid Computing - Technology and Applications' is being organised by the Computer Society of India Div VIII and its Vellore Chapter at the Vellore Institute of Technology on March 11 and 12. Thanks to rapid advances in distributed and Internet-based computing, grid computing has become one of the most important topics in the computing field during the last decade. A major goal of grid computing is to provide efficient access to data. Grids provide access to distributed computing and data resources, allowing data-intensive applications to improve access to, and manage and analyse data. Data-intensive applications such as data mining are used in several domains, such as physics, climate modelling, biology and visualisation. The research area of grid computing is making rapid progress, owing to the increasing necessity of computation in the resolution of complex applications. In the last few years, the grid community has been growing rapidly and many new technologies and components have been proposed. The challenge of grid computing is the complete integration of heterogeneous computing systems and data resources with the aim of providing a global computing space. Resource persons for the meet will be academicians, researchers and industry experts from IIT-M, C-DAC, RedHat, IBM, and Oracle. The topics for discussion include distributed computing models and grid architecture, grid computing infrastructures, middle-ware and management tools, grid applications (including Bioinformatics, eScience and eBusiness), creation and management of virtual organisations, grid information services and grid security issues, autonomic and utility computing on global grids. This workshop is intended for researchers and practitioners in grid computing, and specifically to those who use grid environments to create and manage virtual organisations. For registration and details, contact H.R. Vishwakarma, Chairman, CSI Vellore Chapter through e-mail at chairman@csivc.org or through phone at 0416-2202196, 2202187, 2202276.
