ALAPPUZHA: The Kerala Karshaka Sanghom will organise a farmers' protest meeting before the Alappuzha collectorate on March 6 at 9 p.m. "in protest against the neglect of the Government towards the needs of farmers," sanghom Alappuzha district secretary G. Venugopal has said. At a press conference here on Thursday, Mr. Venugopal said the meeting was being planned as a part of a State-wide protest planned by the Sanghom. CPI(M) Alappuzha district secretary G. Sudhakaran would inaugurate the meet. The former district secretary P.Sudhakaran would preside. He said thousands of farmers from various panchayats and municipalities in the district would participate in the meeting. He said the Government had failed to accede to the demands of farmers to write off agricultural loans; ensure fair price for agricultural products and provide aid to the kin of farmers who committed suicide because of the crisis in the agriculture sector. Mr. Venugopal said the price of agricultural products except rubber was falling. The procurement of paddy in Kuttanad was not effective, he said. The mills entrusted by the Civil Supplies Corporation with the task of procurement were demanding that farmers bring paddy to particular spots instead of collecting it from threshing yards, as promised by the Government, Mr. Venugopal said. He pointed out that the transportation of paddy was causing excess expense to farmers.
