Schoolboy injured as bomb goes off

ANANTAPUR: Vannuruswamy, 12, studying in class seven, was injured seriously at Uravakonda on Thursday when a country-made bomb went off as he was playing near the compound wall of the Zilla Parishad High School.

According to the police, the boy noticed a ball-like object, picked it up and dropped it immediately as smoke was coming out of it. The bomb went off immediately.

Air Deccan flights to Rajahmundry

HYDERABAD: Air Deccan has announced daily flights to Rajahmundry from Hyderabad and Vijayawada from April 1.

In a press release issued here on Thursday, it said bookings for travel starting April 1 to May 31 would be open on Friday.

The fares on this sector would begin at Rs. 500 (plus taxes). Tickets could be purchased through Air Deccan website - www.airdeccan.net or Air Deccan airport counters. The AP call centre number is 9849677008. - Special Correspondent

Engineering colleges' categorisation flayed

HYDERABAD: The All-India Students' Federation (AISF) State council has opposed the Government's move to divide engineering colleges into three categories and fix fees for such institutions.

In a statement issued here on Thursday, AISF president K. Srujan Kumar said a memorandum was submitted to the State Council of Higher Education Chairman K.C. Reddy with a plea to drop the idea. - Special Correspondent

TII awards for tobacco farmers

HYDERABAD: The Tobacco Institute of India's (TII) tobacco farmer awards would be presented to outstanding farmers of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka by Agriculture Minister N. Raghuveera Reddy on March 5.

Fourteen farmers from the two States would be felicitated at a function to be held at FAPPCI office in Red Hills. The awards were instituted in 1999. - Special Correspondent

Book on Chukka Ramaiah released

Hyderabad: Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy released `Chaduvula Tata', a biography of renowned educationist Chukka Ramaiah written by A. Raja Hussain, OSD to Minister for School Education N. Rajyalakshmi on Thursday.

Three women killed as tractor overturns

Kakinada: Three women were killed and four other women, all tribals, were injured when a tractor laden with sand lost control and overturned while overtaking another tractor near Devaramadugula in Y. Ramavaram mandal in the agency area on Wednesday night. The injured persons were admitted to Government hospital at Addateegala. - Correspondent

Stay on teacher transfers vacated

HYDERABAD: A Division Bench of the Andhra Pradesh High Court, comprising Justice J. Chalameshwar and Justice M.E.N. Pathrudu, on Thursday declared that the stay granted on an earlier occasion on promotion and transfer of teachers in the State was being vacated.

It may be recalled that the Government formulated unified service conditions for teachers working in Government schools as well as local bodies. This was challenged by a batch of teachers. The Bench admitted the case and directed that counselling may go on but they may not be given effect to. This stay was vacated. - Legal Correspondent

HYDERABAD: Orders releasing to districts an additional Rs. 35 crores towards scholarships for BC degree students in the current academic year have been issued by the BC Welfare Commissioner. - Special Correspondent

20 hurt as jeep hits autorickshaw

KADAPA: Twenty labourers sustained injuries, three of them seriously, when a jeep hit an autorickshaw near Buddayapalle in Khajipet mandal on Thursday. Karunakar and two others are in a serious condition in Kadapa Government Hospital. Those injured included Sudarshan, Satish, Rajasekhar, B. Ratnam, Balanagamma, Prakasamma, Pullaiah, Ameenuddin, David, Ramanaiah and Subbarayudu. Police registered a case.- Staff Reporter

Sacred pillar re-installed

ANANTAPUR: A new `dhwaja stambham' was installed on the premises of centuries-old Khadri Narasimhaswamy temple at Kadiri in the district on Thursday. The previous sacred pillar collapsed in July last. Temple Trust Board Chairman Pratap Reddy, Executive Officer Laxminarayana and others attended. - Staff Reporter

Municipal staff stage protest

ANANTAPUR: The engineering staff of Guntakal Municipality staged a dharna in front of the civic office there on Thursday demanding payment of salaries pending for the last three months. The protest led by councillor B.L. Anjaneyulu and union leaders Abdul Basha and Prasad disrupted the functioning of the civic body's office. They called off the protest with an assurance from Commissioner Ekambaram to clear two months' salaries within a week.- Staff Reporter

Kurnool municipality budget passed

ADONI: The Municipal Council, presided by Chairman Vitta Kistappa, adopted the surplus budget for the financial year 2006-07 at a meeting on Thursday. The budget indicated total income of the corporation as Rs. 22.48 crores while the expenditure was Rs. 21.85 crores. A surplus of Rs. 63.28 lakhs was projected. The budget had an opening balance of Rs 45.80 lakhs. Municipal Commissioner Ramakishan and others were present.
