Cleanliness programme in limbo

Launched amidst fanfare in October 2004, the `Destination Cleaning' programme of the Tourism Department seems to be non-starter.

Launching the drive, Minister for Tourism K.C. Venugopal had stated that the aim of the project was to ensure cleanliness of tourist locales in Kerala. The District Tourism Promotion Councils and District Collectors had been asked to initiate cleanliness drives in each district. And the Government was directed to entrust Kudumbasree units with the clean-up work.

Despite being a popular hub for tourists, mainly from Europe and the U.S., the beach and nearby areas in Fort Kochi continue to be littered with garbage and dirt. During the tourist season, tourists outnumber locals in the area. But, the Government and civic agencies seem least bothered about ensuring the cleanliness of the place.

The beach and the road near the Dutch Cemetery have become garbage dumps.
