KOCHI: Folk culture thrives on sharing and togetherness, and, despite incursions by the urban lifestyle, it conveys a message of community living. A festival of folk art forms, oral traditions, handicraft and forest produce currently on at the Rajendra Maidan is bound to entertain visitors. The show has been organised by Kerala Institute for Research, Training and Development Studies for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (KIRTADS), Kozhikode, and the Departments of Scheduled Caste and Tribes Development. The festival is an exposition of the traditional practices and of the methods of transferring knowledge from one generation to the next. It also highlights how the communities adapt to the changing times. Besides portraying various dance forms, handcrafted items from roots of coffee plants, bamboo, coconut shells, grass and wood are on display. Honey, lemon grass oil, herbal medicines and hand-woven garments too are on show.
