Ayodhya: BJP on Thursday demanded President's Rule in Uttar Pradesh in the wake of the Allahabad High Court disqualifying the defection of 40 BSP MLAs on whose support the Mulayam Singh Yadav government came into existence. It was imperative for the Chief Minister to resign and pave way for imposition of Central rule, BJP vice president Kalyan Singh said adding under no circumstances should the present government be allowed to hold the election, as it would be against democratic traditions and moral grounds. There would also be chances of misuse of official machinery in case the present government remained caretaker government, he told reporters last night. Saying that introduction of confidence motion by the government in Vidhan Sabha was meaningless because of High not directed it to seek confidence of the House. He criticized the government for deteriorating law and order situation and said that the BJP was ready for fresh assembly elections and would contest it on its own. Meanwhile, a senior Congress leader and former Union Minister Satya Prakash Malviya said the Governor should tackle the situation making use of the powers granted by the Constitution. "The Allahabad High Court judgement on 40 defected MLAs has a put a question mark on the sanctity of Samajwadi Party government in the state. However, Yadav put up a defiant face by bringing in a confidence motion and carrying out a drama of re-affirming his majority," he told reporters in Allahabad. -- PTI
