KHAMMAM: District Collector Rajendra Narendra Nimje inaugurated the special handloom expo- 2006 here on Thursday. Speaking on the occasion, he said that the administration had been taking special steps to extend support to weavers. He said that handlooms would ensure quality, as well as a source of livelihood for weavers. He said that handlooms from the State enjoyed good markets abroad. He said that the administration would organise similar exhibitions enhancing the scope for marketing cloth from the local handloom societies. In all, 55 stalls were put up in the expo. The Collector hoped that the expo would help facilitate business of over Rs 1 crore for the handloom societies taking part in it. He said that the handloom societies were providing quality products at a marginal profit. Khammam Municipal Chairperson Sameena Afroze said that such expos should be organised more often in the town, giving the consumers an opportunity to buy cloth directly from the societies. Md. Masood Ali, regional deputy director of handlooms, said that some 50 such exhibitions were organised so far in the State this year with the intention of providing marketing facilities to the handloom workers and societies. They all received overwhelming response, he added.
