Kalam discusses energy security with Bush

New Delhi: President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam met United States President George Bush ahead of the ceremonial banquet and discussed issues related to energy security, energy independence and reforms in the United Nations.

During the 40-minute meeting, Mr. Kalam gave a 20-minute power point presentation about energy security for India by 2020 and energy independence by 2030, Rashtrapati Bhavan spokesman S.M. Khan said.

Mr. Kalam highlighted various points about bio-fuel, renewable sources, nuclear energy using thorium and solar energy. Mr. Bush appreciated the presentation and India's determination in achieving energy independence.

The U.S. President briefed Mr. Kalam about the agreement signed with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Thursday, and said the focus was on the energy sector. He also mentioned about reforms in the U.N., a move supported by Mr. Kalam.

Conflict should not give rise to war, and the U.N. should play a major role in this, Mr. Kalam told Mr. Bush.
