CHENNAI: The Women's Voluntary Service (WVS), Joint Action Council for Women (JACW) and Altrusa International (Madras Club) observed International Women's Day, which falls on March 8, at Chetpet here on Thursday. V. Shanta, Chairman, Cancer Institute, distributed financial assistance to destitute women. Mano Bhathavatsalam, secretary, WVS, welcomed the gathering that included school children, social workers and representatives from the organisations. Speakers reminded the audience of women pioneers in the freedom struggle, performing arts and journalism. The various dimensions of empowerment were discussed by Prema Kasturi, president, JACW, Visa Ravindran, Rameeza Rasheed and M. Bhuvaneshwari of Bharathi Women's College. Sarojini Varadappan presided over the function. The speakers urged women to destroy stereotypes and find ways to participate meaningfully in the social, political and economic spheres. "Only about 26 per cent of women in the country are estimated to work, mostly in the unorganised sector," said Dr. Rasheed. Dr. Bhuvaneshwari screened short films highlighting the consequences of dowry and domestic violence.
