Thiruvananthapuram: At least 11 students were injured and public property damaged when two groups of students clashed at the College of Engineering, Thiruvananthapuram, on Thursday. The Sreekariyam police have registered three cases in connection with the incident. The police have also arrested an eighth semester computer science student, Cyril. K. Thankachan, on the charge of destroying Government-owned college property. The student has been charged under relevant sections of the Public Property Destruction Act. The police said he would be produced before the magistrate court. Sub Inspector, Sreekariyam, M.R. Satheesh, said Thursday's violence at the CET was the most recent in a series of clashes between day scholars and hostellers. The immediate provocation for the fight was an earlier clash between the two groups. The official said a considerable number of hostellers were activists of a left student wing organisation. The group of day scholars owed allegiance to certain ruling front supported student organisations. The police suspect that both groups have engaged anti-social elements in the area to settle scores. A police picket has been posted in the area.
