American couple stages protest at Secretariat gate

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Those who passed by the `samara gate' of the Secretariat on Thursday morning had a surprise in store - two westerners protesting against the visit of U.S. President George Bush.

To all those who cared to ask, the two, Cassie and Mathew (Mathew later requested that their last name be left out) from Wisconsin, the U.S., repeatedly declared their opposition to "the domestic and foreign policies of George Bush." While Mathew held up a placard that said in Malayalam, ` Bush vendaa', Cassie's placard read, `Americans Against US Imperialism.'

Mathew who can speak Malayalam said he himself had written the slogan in Malayalam.

The husband and wife had come to the Secretariat gate after learning that there was to be an anti-Bush protest march there. After waiting in vain for some time, they decided to go ahead with their own protest.

"We are here to express solidarity with Indians who are opposed to the visit of George Bush," said Cassie who said she has been learning Bharatanatyam here. Mathew said he was doing research in Ayurveda.
