KOCHI: The hartal called by the CPI(ML) in protest against the visit of U.S. President George W. Bush on Thursday evoked partial response in the city and its suburbs. Bus services were affected as private bus operators failed to operate the normal schedule. Private vehicles and autorickshaws were on the roads as usual. Functioning of schools and colleges were hit, as private buses kept off the road in the morning. However, attendance in Government institutions was normal. The police said that windowpanes of KSRTC buses were destroyed in stone throwing at Aluva Desam in the morning. CPI(ML) activists held an anti-Bush protest near the Kochi Corporation office and burnt him in effigy. A party statement said that the hartal was total in the State. Representatives of the party said that the Union Government had acted unilaterally by entering into a nuclear deal with the U.S.
