NEW DELHI: While such incidents are very routine on Indian Railways, a man paid a heavy price for daring to jump on to the Delhi Metro tracks for crossing over to the opposite platform. For the offence he was nabbed by the Metro staff and handed over to Patel Nagar police who formally arrested him.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation said it was around 11-55 a.m. that the man, identified as 22-year-old Raj Kumar, jumped on to the tracks at the Shadipur Metro Station in an attempt to reach the other platform.

Due to his action, the driver of the Metro train coming towards the station applied emergency brakes and was able to save his life. The person was apprehended and handed over to the police for prosecution.

`Criminals' arrested

NEW DELHI: Two alleged criminals were arrested following an encounter with the Special Staff of the South-West Delhi police at Dwarka on Wednesday. Two pistols were allegedly recovered from their possession.

Acting on a tip-off that a criminal named Pawan Tokas and his accomplice would come to Dwarka in a Maruti car, the police laid a trap near Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Apartments and intercepted the vehicle. Subsequently, the occupants alighted from the vehicle and opened fire on the police personnel, who fired two rounds in retaliation. The two were overpowered.

During interrogation, they identified themselves as Pawan Tokas and Sunil Kumar. The police said the accused were involved in several cases of murder and robbery in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. Pawan is said to be the accomplice of a dreaded criminal, Hemant alias Sonu, who carries a reward of Rs. 50,000 on his head.

Youth Congress convention

NEW DELHI: The Indian Youth Congress is organising a two-day convention of district presidents from all over the country here from Friday to discuss implementation of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme.

According to Indian Youth Congress president Ashok Tanwar, the youth wing had been getting reports that in many States where this scheme was being implemented there had been problems with regard to registration due to uncooperative attitude of the authorities concerned. This was true of the non-Congress ruled States that had been claiming that the scheme was a programme of the State Government.

Mr. Tanwar said Congress president Sonia Gandhi was very much concerned about these developments. She has been asking the Youth Congress workers to perform the role of a watchdog in the NREGA scheme not just by creating awareness but also monitoring the implementation of the scheme.
