NEW DELHI: A one-month-long painting exhibition titled "Wind, Water and Energy" opened at Urusvati Art Gallery in Vasant Vihar here on Friday. The exhibition features works of 22 artists including Ramesh Garg (Rajasthan), Ravindra Singh Salvi (Mumbai), Phalguni Das Gupta (Dehra Dun), Shobha Broota (Delhi), Sunil De (Kolkata), Shail Choyal (Rajasthan) and Yusuf (Bhopal). Earlier, all these artists had converged at an artist camp in Mumbai where they were asked to paint on "Wind, Water and Energy".
Different response
Each artist responded differently to the ambience of swaying coconut trees and the sound of sea waves. Phalguni Das Gupta expressed the power of uncontrollable wind, while Shobha Broota showed the infinity of space. Shail Choyal's painting depicted the reverse waves of the sea. At the exhibition, septuagenarian Ramesh Garg has portrayed a woman holding the horns of a robust bull, highlighting the Indian woman's strength literally as well as metaphorically. "Normally artists portray their inner thoughts according to their wishes. But at the artist camp it was a different kind of experience as we were given a subject. Through my work I succeeded in showing that women are progressing in every field," said Garg here on Friday. Born in Ajmer, Garg is one of the senior most artists of the country. He graduated from the prestigious J.J. School of Arts in Mumbai and established himself in the world of modern art in 1964 when his first exhibition was held at the Taj Art Gallery in Mumbai. That was the time when the field of modern art scene was dominated by eminent artists like K.K. Hebbar, K.H. Ara, M.F. Husain and S.H. Raza. Internationally acclaimed artists like Pablo Picasso, Vincent Van Gogh, Paul Gauguin and Salvador Dali have inspired Garg.
