International Women's Day celebrated

CHENNAI: The Women's Voluntary Service (WVS), Joint Action Council for Women (JACW) and Altrusa International (Madras Club) observed International Women's Day, which falls on March 8, at Chetpet here on Thursday. V. Shanta, Chairman, Cancer Institute, distributed financial assistance to destitute women.

Mano Bhathavatsalam, secretary, WVS, welcomed the gathering that included school children, social workers and representatives from the organisations.

The various dimensions of empowerment were discussed by Prema Kasturi, president, JACW, Visa Ravindran, Rameeza Rasheed and M. Bhuvaneshwari of Bharathi Women's College.

Sarojini Varadappan presided over the function.
