Pondicherry: R. ParasuRaman, chairman, Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Southern Region, has said that the peaceful labour in Pondicherry helped the Union Territory emerge as a hub of industrial development. He was addressing industrialists and delegates of engineering and manufacturing entrepreneurs at the inauguration of a three-day exhibition, INDEX 2006, organised by CII, here on Friday. Maintaining that the exhibition was an important initiative, he said the CII was keen on promoting competitiveness. It brought under one roof buyers and sellers. Suggesting that cluster development also be encouraged, he highlighted the impact of the total turnover of the industries on the overall Gross Domestic Product and the economic growth of the five southern States. INDEX 2006 has been organised to showcase the manufacturing and engineering capabilities of small and medium enterprises situated in Pondicherry. It was also meant to emerge as a platform for industries to meet, network and explore business opportunities with large manufacturing companies. The CII would soon release a detailed statement on comprehensive development of the Pondicherry economy by promoting tourism, education and industries. He was all praise for the `progressive mindset of the Pondicherry Administration' in working for the industrialisation of the Union Territory. L. Ganesh, vice-chairman of Rane Group and past chairman of CII (Southern Region), who inaugurated the fair and released a catalogue, said competitiveness on the part of the industries was essential. The manufacturing sector was becoming a key factor for growth of the economy, he said. Mr. Ganesh said the five features necessary for successful working of small and medium industries and to achieve excellence in manufacturing industry, adopted in Japan,were: quality, cost, delivery, safety and morale. C. S. Dwivedi, Chairman of Pondicherry chapter of CII, said a two-day sourcing forum marked the three-day exposition of products of small and medium industries. Delegates from large automotive, engineering, IT and electrical industries would make presentations. A. L. Shah, Chairman of the INDEX 2006, said nearly 30 industrial units put up stalls. K Ravi Sankar, vice-chairman of CII Pondicherry, also spoke.
