Karunanidhi greets Muralitharan

CHENNAI: The president of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, M. Karunanidhi, on Friday congratulated Sri Lankan off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan on his getting his 1,000th international wicket in his 100th Test.

Muralitharan, who needed five more wickets to get to the mark before the Test against Bangladesh, took three wickets in the first innings and five in the second innings. He now has a total of 1,004 international wickets including 411 in one day internationals, Mr. Karunanidhi pointed out. — Special Correspondent

Anna varsity semester exam results

CHENNAI: The results of the undergraduate and postgraduate semester examinations of Anna University held in November/December 2005 were published on Friday. The results have been sent to the respective colleges, a release here said.

The last date for applying for revaluation and obtaining xerox copies of answer sheets is March 13 and applications are available with the colleges. Candidates have been asked to apply only through the colleges concerned. The results have also been posted on the following web sites which can be accessed by keying in the candidate's register number: www.annauni.edu/results.html. www.chennaionline.com,www.ifactorz.com, www.webulagam.com, www.indiaresults.com, www.squarebrothers.com. — Special Correspondent

Vanniar Sangam charge against Ramadoss

CHENNAI: Pattali Makkal Katchi leader S. Ramadoss has no locus standi to demand the resignation of Chief Minister Jayalalithaa over the common entrance test issue, said Vanniyar Sangam president A.K. Natarajan.

In a statement here, Mr. Natarajan charged that it was Union Health Minister R. Anbumani, under whose control the All-India Medical Council functioning, who should resign as Minister for his failure to bring a legislation abolishing the CET. He also criticised Dr. Ramadoss and his party MPs for not taking any step to release commemorative stamps in honour of leaders belonging to the Vanniya community like S.S. Ramasami Padayatchi and Manickavelar.

The president of the Makkal Katchi, Dheeran, alleged that Dr. Ramadoss betrayed those who worked with him. He said people in the State would "expose" Dr. Ramadoss in the coming Assembly election. — Special Correspondent

Railway Traffic Service officials meet

CHENNAI: Members belonging to Indian Railway Traffic Service (IRTS) will meet here on March 4 in connection with the annual IRTS Day being celebrated at the residence of Southern Railway General Manager Thomas Varghese, who himself is an IRTS officer. It was on this day in 1967 the Traffic Transportation and Commercial Departments of Indian Railways were redesignated as IRTS by the Union Public Service Commission, according to an official release. — Special Correspondent

Air Deccan flight to Tuticorin

CHENNAI: Effective April 1, Air Deccan will introduce daily flights between Chennai and Tuticorin. The low cost airline will deploy a 48-seater ATR-42-500 series aircraft on the Tuticorin sector which will be operated via Madurai.

According to a release, the new flight will leave Chennai at 9-15 a.m., reach Madurai at 10-30 a.m., leave Madurai at 10-50 a.m. and reach Tuticorin at 11-15 a.m. In the return direction, the service departs Tuticorin at 11-30 a.m. and arrives directly to Chennai at 12-55 p.m. — Special Correspondent

Man commits suicide

KARUR : A 36-year-old man committed suicide after having a quarrel with his wife over some domestic dispute near here.

M. Chandrasekaran of Rajiv Gandhi Nagar in Karur consumed poison and was rushed to a private hospital before being shifted to the Karur Government Hospital where he died on Friday.

Three held for assault

KARUR : The K. Paramathi police in Karur district have arrested three persons on charges of intercepting and assaulting a woman over land dispute.

S. Ponnammal (60), her son Ramachandran (27) and their kin Palanisamy (53), all belonging to Pulikadu near Athipalayam Pudur were picked up after they allegedly intercepted and assaulted K. Valliammal of the same village over a land dispute.

Valliammal has been admitted to a private hospital and so is Ponnammal.

Three arrested

KARUR : The police have arrested three persons for assaulting their neighbour over personal dispute.

K. Chinnadurai (27), his brothers Samidurai (22) and Jayaraj (23) belonging to the VOC Nagar, Thanthonrimalai area, were picked up after they allegedly assaulted and injured Indira Gandhi (40) and her son, Jayachandran (25). Another brother of Chinnadurai, Dharmar, is also charged with attacking the mother and son who have been admitted to the Karur Government Hospital.

Farmers plan stir

PERAMBALUR : The district wing of the Tamizhaga Vivasayigal Sangam has urged the State Government to initiate steps for disbursement of compensation to flood-hit farmers of the district.

A resolution, adopted at its meeting held on Thursday, said though the State Government had announced a relief package for the farmers who bore the brunt of the flood and torrential rains in October / November last year, a section of farmers in the district was yet to receive it.

The meeting specifically wanted the compensation to be paid off to all flood-hit farmers of Tirumanur and T. Pazhur blocks.

The State secretary of the Sangam, R. Raja Chidambaram, presided over the meeting.

At another meeting held at Ariyalur on Friday, farmers planned to launch a `dharna' agitation at Ariyalur and Perambalur on March 17 and 20 respectively, in support of this demand.

Scholarship for wards of RPF personnel

TIRUCHI : The Prime Minister has introduced a new scholarship scheme for widows and wards of the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Railway Special Protection Force (RPSF) personnel. The widows/wards of RPF/RPSF men, who were killed in action or died in harness, are eligible for this scholarship. Those studying first-year professional degree programme in engineering, medicine, dental, veterinary sciences, MBA and MCA etc. duly recognised by the respective government regulatory bodies such as All-India Council for Technical Education, Medical Council of India etc. are eligible.

The value of the monthly scholarship will be Rs. 1,250 for boys and Rs. 1,500 for girls, available for two to five years depending on the duration of the course, an official release issued here on Thursday said.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI : The level in the Mettur dam stood at 112.54 feet on Friday. The inflow was 1412 cusecs and the outflow, 1000 cusecs. — Staff Reporter.

Rain in Tuticorin

Tuticorin: Sudden overnight rain brought cheers to the residents in the district. Sources said the 19 rain guage stations in the district recorded a total rainfall of 21.4 mm in the last 24 hours ending at 8 a.m. on Friday.

Heavy rain lashed various parts of Kanyakumari district also.

Traffic hit

TIRUNELVELI: Vehicular movement at Kokkirakulam here was affected for sometime on Friday when students of a private engineering college blocked traffic.

Condemning "inadequate infrastructure facilities and unhealthy practices being followed in their college," they observed a fast here on Thursday. When their attempt to submit a petition to the Collector failed, they squatted on the road.

Chain snatched

Nagercoil: The police are searching for some unidentified persons who snatched a chain from a woman on Friday.

Selva Mary, wife of John Marceline of Eraniel, was returning to her home after attending a marriage at Madathittuvilai, when two persons relieved her chain worth Rs. 70,000.

Seven lawyers held

Tuticorin: Seven lawyers, who assembled near the police station here and threw stones at it in the wee hours of Thursday, were arrested.

C. Harirajan (29), N. Manthramoorthy (34), I. Subbu (31), M. Barnabas (36), S. Marks (30), Paul Joseph (29) and J. Ignatius (32), were caught while T.M.S.Prabhu (30) and Victor Anto (29) escaped.

They were also charged with use of abusive language and obstructing officials from delivering their duty.

The seven lawyers apologised to the Principal District Judge S. Solaimalai, sources said. A hunt is on for the remaining accused.

New phone scheme

Tuticorin: The Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited has introduced `One India' scheme for land and cell phone users here on Wednesday.

Under this scheme, charges for STD calls made to any place in India will be Re. 1 per minute, for local calls to BSNL network will be 40 paise per minute and the monthly rent is Rs. 299.

For cell phone users (prepaid), a new recharge coupon has been introduced with the face value of Rs. 799. For calls made under prepaid scheme, 60 paise will be charged for 60 seconds.

The BSNL has decided to extend Plan 100 scheme, which was initially meant for Central and State Government employees, to public also.

Two killed in accident

ERODE : A doctor and his wife were died in a road accident on Thursday.

According to police, Dr Tambiran, 57 and his wife, Amudha, 50, were going in a car to Coimbatore from Chitode.

When they came near Sengalipalayam a lorry from the opposite direction dashed against the car, killed the doctor and his wife on the spot.

It is said that Dr Tambiran was working in Valparai Government Hospital, was transferred to Thirukoilure. While he was going to Coimbatore to meet his daughter studying in a medical college, the accident occurred. Police have registered a case. - Staff Reporter

7 years RI for couple

ERODE: The Erode First Additional Assistant Subordinate Judge M. Raju awarded seven years RI to a couple on Thursday.

The prosecution case was that Gopal, 56 of Olapalayam, Modakurichi had two sons, Mageshkumar and Jayaprakash, through his first wife.

After the death of his first wife Karunaiammal, 20 years back he married Sulochana.

On April 24, 2004 Mageshkumar committed suicide by consuming poison. But his brother, Jayaprakash, an advocate, filed a suit in the court, stating that Gopal and his wife Sulochana had not been providing proper food for Mageshkumar, humiliated and harassed him. Not able to bear the torture Mageshkumar committed suicide.

The judge awarded seven years RI each to Gopal and Sulochana. - Staff Reporter

Golden chariot inaugurated

ERODE: The Golden Chariot of the Bannariamman Temple, Bannari was inaugurated on Thursday by the District Collector, D. Karthikeyan. Usually all the vehicles proceeding to Thimbam ghat road will be stopped near the temple for the drivers to offer their prayers.

The chariot was erected at a cost of Rs 53 lakhs.

The Collector also inaugurated the Paragaram of the temple built at a cost of Rs 70 lakhs.

The Secretary to the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment Board, P.A. Ramiah and others participated. - Staff Reporter
