The cave systems of Meghalaya

Shillong: The longest cave system in the Indian subcontinent has been discovered in Meghalaya's Jaintia Hills district. A team of speleologists has found a system over 22.2 km long. This surpasses the previous record of 21.55 km of another system in the same district.

"The linking of the Krem um im-Liat Prah cave system to Krem labbit (Khaidong) to create a single cave system of 22,202.65 m in length is the longest cave known to date in the Indian sub-continent," a team member siad here on Friday. The team, comprising 17 members from the U.K., two each from Switzerland and Denmark, one each from Austria and Ireland and five from India, spent three and half weeks focussing on the cave areas of Shnongrim Ridge near the Nongkhlieh area.

The previous record was noted at Kotsati Umlawam. It measured 21.55 km, according to B.D. Kharpran Dally, a speleologist in Meghalaya.

Between February 7 and March 1 the team explored 39 caves, mapping and photographing them. It discovered 15,498 m of new passages. Of the 39 mapped, 36 were new. — PTI
