BANGALORE: Bangalore-based Indian Institute of Science (IISc.) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Karolinska Institute in Sweden, one of Europe's largest medical universities, to work together in the areas of biosciences and bioengineering. Briefing presspersons here, Swedish Ambassador to India Inga Erikson Fogh said the MoU was preceded by a bilateral trade agreement between Sweden and India to forge partnership in science and technology. President of the Karolinska Institute Harriet Wallberg-Henriksson said the MoU includes exchange of scientists and Ph.D. scholars, and exploration of possible research projects between the two institutes. The Karolinska Institute and the IISc. will organise a two-day workshop on "Innovation in life sciences" here in collaboration with VINNOVA and the Embassy of Sweden. The Swedish Ambassador said the Karolinska Institute wanted to forge strategic cooperation agreements on basic and clinical sciences with organisations worldwide. It had collaborative understanding with institutes in the U.S., China and Singapore. She said India has emerged a leader in information technology and biotechnology, and there is immense scope for the two nations to cooperate with each other. IISc. Chairman (International Relations) Rahul Pandit said the recent bilateral agreement between India and Sweden has enabled the IISc. to work out a strategic partnership with premier institutions in other countries. The IISc. will take up research to tackle diabetes and HIV, and help conduct field trials of drugs, he added.
