Court turns down students' plea

Staff Reporter

They wanted an order to the RGUHS to allow them to appear for the first year examination

BANGALORE: The Karnataka High Court on Friday declined to issue a direction to the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) to permit 43 students of an Ayurvedic college in Belgaum district to appear for the Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine Sciences (BAMS) examination.

The students, most of them from Sangli and Kolhapur in Maharashtra, said they submitted applications for enrolling for the 2004-05 BAMS course in Gometesh Ayurvedic Medical College run by Gometesh Vidyapeetha at Hindwadi in response to an advertisement. They appeared for the entrance examination and were selected on merit.

They claimed that most of them were from rural areas and they were given the impression that the course was recognised by the authorities. They said they were, however, not able to go into the technicalities of recognition and affiliation.

They have sent applications to the RGUHS to appear for the first-year examination this month. However, the RGUHS has not sent examination forms as, according to it, the institution has not obtained the approval of the Central Council of Indian Medicine. The students had sought a direction from the court to the RGUHS to permit them to appear for the examination.

Justice N.K. Patil said the court will not pass an interim order.
