NEW DELHI: Punjab and Sind Bank (PSB) braved a late charge by Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) and hung on to win 4-3 to book semifinal berth in the Maharaja Ranjit Singh hockey tournament at the Shivaji Stadium here on Friday. Chandi brothers revived PSB's hopes after PIA had taken early lead through Yasir Islam (10th minute). Gurvinder Singh Chandi scored an equaliser in the 38th minute after the interval. Baljit Singh Chandi put his team ahead in the 44th minute with yet another piece of good work. Ajit Pal Singh (48th) scored from the spot while Parminder Singh (51st) put PSB ahead. But PIA rallied brilliantly through goals from M. Farooq (57th) and Amir Saleem (67th) but lost out on time. Earlier in the day, Brojen Singh pumped in two goals to steer Indian Airlines to 3-2 win against qualifier South Central Railway (SCR). With three wins from as many matches, Indian Airlines topped Group `B' and will play Indian Oil in the second semi-final. The PSB takes on Group `A' toppers, Bharat Petroleum in the first semifinal.
Brojen strikes
Striker Brojen Singh scored on either side of the interval as Airlines defeating much-improved SCR. After Gurpreet Singh (15th) opened the account, SCR rallied through Mayur Subbiah (18th). Brojen put Airlines ahead in the 22nd minute scoring on the run for 2-1 half-time lead. Johnson Ekka blasted SCR's second equaliser, in the 57th minute. But Brojen made sure that Airlines take full points as he struck a minute before the close.
