BANGALORE: Title-holder Punjab Police played its first match directly in the quarterfinals and had to sweat it out before winning 2-1 against Central Reserve Police Force. International player Daljeet Singh scored in as early as the eighth minute and Satwender Singh made it 2-0 five minutes before the short break. In the second half CRPF stood fast to prevent a rout and even gave Punjab Police some cause for concern with man-of-the match Balkar Singh scoring for CRPF in the 64th minute. Host Karnataka's chance of a semifinal slot was blown away by Border Security Force, who went down 0-2 to the visitor. Both goals came late in the second half with Peter Tirkey (50th) and Habil Topno (53rd) steering their side to victory. Peter Tirkey was named man-of-the match. In the quarterfinals played in the morning session, Jammu & Kashmir edged past Maharashtra 2-1. J & K dominated the first session and logged its first goal in the 28th minute with Gurjeet Singh scoring. Mandeep Singh scored in the second half in the 39th minute and Hameed Sheikh pulled one back for Maharashtra two minutes before the final whistle. Gurjeet Singh was named man of the match. Uttar Pradesh doused Haryana's hopes with a 1-0 win. Sunil netted the match winner in the seventh minute and UP's K.K Gupta was named the man of the match. The semifinal line-up for Saturday is J &K Vs Punjab Police (3 p.m) and BSF vs Uttar Pradesh (5 p.m).
