Different memento to George Bush

Hyderabad: For a change, the memento from the State Government was not any replica of Charminar.

Seeing off US President George W. Bush at the airport here at the end of his half-day visit to the city, Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy presented him a memento of a deftly-carved wooden `Viswaroopam', the all-inclusive form of Lord Krishna as shown to Arjuna minutes before commencing the mythological Mahabharata war. - Special Correspondent

YSR efforts lauded

Hyderabad : Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee has congratulated Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy for his successful efforts in securing the US Consulate for Hyderabad.

Student drowned

NIZAMABAD : A 10th class student, Bejawada Praveen of Kamareddy, was drowned in an abandoned agricultural well on the outskirts of Rameswarpally village under Kamareddy rural police station limits on Friday.

The mishap occurred when the victim went for a combined study along with his friends at a tamarind orchard at the village. - Staff Reporter

Job scheme

KARIMNAGAR : The Andhra Pradesh Rural Employment Guarantee scheme will be formally launched from April 2 by providing employment to agricultural labourers in the district.

A total of 1.69 lakh beneficiaries seeking employment were identified by conducting gram sabhas in all mandals, according to district water management agency project director A. Srinivas. - Staff Reporter

Varsity common entrance test

TIRUPATI : SV University's Directorate of Admissions has announced that SVU Common Entrance Test (SVUCET-2006) for admission to post-graduate courses will be conducted from May 2 to 10.

A notification to this effect will be issued on March 6 and sale of applications will commence on March 9. The last date for receipt of applications is April 10, according to its Director V. Kodandarami Reddy.

5-year jail for abusing in name of caste

Sangareddy : Special (SC and ST) and Fifth Additional Sessions Judge D. Chiranjeevi Babu has sentenced V. Digambar Reddy of BHEL township to undergo five-year rigorous imprisonment and pay a fine of Rs. 5000 for abusing senior BHEL engineer D. Balaji in the name of caste. - Staff Reporter

Man, daughter commit suicide

SRIKAKULAM : P. Umamaheswara Rao, a cable operator and his daughter Lavanya, residents of Ponnada street in Itchapuram town died after consuming pesticide on Friday. Domestic problems were stated to be reason for their extreme step. - Special Correspondent

Two naxalites killed in encounter

GUNTUR : Two Communist Party of India (Maoist) naxalites were killed in an encounter with a police party in Durgi mandal of Guntur district on Friday.

The police failed to identify the dead, but said that one of them was district committee member as a self-loading rifle (SLR) was found on the body, while a .410 Muskat rifle with a kit bag was found.- Staff Reporter

Plea for increasing pharmacist posts

KURNOOL: President of Kurnool Pharmacists General Association M. Brahmaiah urged the General Hospital authorities to increase the number of pharmacist posts to reduce the workload. 10-year imprisonment for murder

MADANAPALLE: The Fast Track Judge Suryanarayana Gowdu imposed a 10-year imprisonment and Rs.200 fine on Khadarvalli of Santhagate area, Madanapalle, in a murder case of Gowramma of the same area.— Correspondent

KURNOOL: The protest against the visit of U.S. President George W. Bush continued for the fourth day here on Friday. The supporters of CITU and All India Democratic Women Association, staged a demonstration against the visit of Mr. Bush and burnt his effigy.

Three killed, 15 hurt in road accident

KURNOOL: Three persons died and 15 others were injured when an auto and a jeep collided at Gospadu near Nandyal on Thursday night. The injured were shifted to hospital. The accident occurred when a family hailing from R.S. Gajulapalli in Mahanandi mandal was returning after attending a function.- Staff Reporter

Kurnool boy secures rank in GK test

KURNOOL: P. Santhi Swaroop Reddy, seventh standard student of Pratibha Model School here secured the 52nd rank in the national level General Knowledge test held by Centre for Human Resources Development, Bangalore. He was awarded merit scholarship of Rs. 1,500. Another student of the school, M. Bharat Kumar Reddy, eighth standard student, also bagged the merit scholarship while the school secured 116th position at national level, according to a press note.-Staff Reporter
