Budget session from March 22

Centre help sought to meet drought

Dehra Dun: The budget session of Uttaranchal Assembly will begin on March 22, the State Chief Secretary M. Ramachandran said on Friday.

Talking to media persons after the completion of Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister N.D. Tiwari here on Friday, Mr Ramachandran said the Centre has been approached to help meet the anticipated drought situation in the State following a dry winter.

He said with Rs 50 crores available in the State calamity fund, the Government is ready to meet the emergency and also has requested for a central team to review the situation.

In order to meet the shortage of potable water during this summer, the Cabinet has decided to release Rs 53 lakhs for the maintenance of hand pumps. The Cabinet has also decided to relax tax collection from farmers, he added.

The Chief Secretary further informed that the decision to issue bar licence to hotels and restaurants has also been taken.

It has also been proposed to collect excise income of Rs 360 crores. -- UNI
