NGOs seek Anderson's extradition

Staff Correspondent

Urge Manmohan Singh to raise the issue with George Bush

BHOPAL: The Bhopal Gas Peedit Mahila Udyog Sanghathan (BGPMUS) and Bhopal Gas Peedit Sangharsh Sahayog Samiti (BGPSSS), two NGOs working for the cause of the victims of the 1984 gas disaster, have written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh demanding immediate extradition of the former chairman of the U.S. multinational Union Carbide Corporation, Warren Anderson, who is a prime accused in the criminal case linked with the Bhopal gas disaster.

The convener of BGPMUS, Abdul Jabbar told The Hindu that on behalf of 60,000 victims of Bhopal disaster, he has sent a letter, signed jointly by N.D. Jayaprakash, co-convener of BGPSSS, urging the Prime Minister to raise the issue of Mr. Anderson's extradition with U.S. President George Bush during his India visit.

They added that the Prime Minister should seek an assurance from the President that the accused would be extradited from USA to India to stand trial without further delay.

The Prime Minister has been urged to take all necessary steps to ensure that the accused company, Union Carbide Corporation, and its officials do not escape criminal liability.

Thousands of Bhopal residents had died due to the leakage of tons of extremely toxic gases from the Union Carbide pesticide plant on the night of December 2-3, 1984.

Mr. Anderson, the then chairman of UCC and accused number one in the Bhopal gas leak disaster criminal case, was proclaimed an absconder on February 1, 1992.
