CHERISHED MOMENTS: Braille learners attend a programme organised by the district panchayat and the District Literacy Mission in Malappuram on Friday.
MALAPPURAM: A gathering of Braille learners was held here on Friday under the aegis of the district panchayat and District Literacy Mission as part of the ongoing Braille literacy project. About 300 visually challenged Braille learners and their teachers from different blocks in the district took part in the programme. Local Administration Minister K. Kutty Ahamed Kutty inaugurated the meeting. District Collector T.T. Antony was the chief guest. Umer Arakkal, chairman of the panchayat standing committee for Development, presided. Saleem Kuruvambalam, district panchayat member, welcomed the gathering. Apart from sharing their learning experiences, the participants also used the occasion to exhibit their artistic talents. Many of them sang songs. Abdul Jaleel, a visually challenged teacher from Parappanangadi, regaled the audience with a mimicry performance. The District Literacy Mission had launched the Braille literacy drive in association with the district panchayat with the aim of helping over 2,000 visually challenged persons in the district attain self-sufficiency. Lifting them to the mainstream of society by strengthening their socio-cultural skills was also one of the aims of the project. Braille literacy classes had begun on January 16 at 14 centres in the district. Teachers with proficiency in Braille script guided the learners.
