Will `Sudesi' help Vijaykanth's chances at the hustings?

S.R. Ashok Kumar

The actor denies he did the film with an eye on polls

CHENNAI: Film star-turned-politician Vijaykanth's new movie, Sudesi, has evoked interest among his fans and the public. It was released on Friday close on the heels of the announcement of the schedule for the Assembly election in the State.

"Will the film provide the much needed morale booster to Vijaykanth, who is the leader of the fledgling Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam? Will it help the `Captain' to overcome all impediments?"

These questions loom large in the minds of his supporters who wait with bated breath as the actor prepares his party for the May 8 election.

For Vijaykanth, the movie meeting with success also appears to be important.

The actor, who was in the city for a few days, said: "Sudesi was planned to be a Deepavali release last year. Since Perarasu was completed first, I wanted that to be released first.

However, Perarasu was not released, though the producer mentioned many auspicious days such as Tamil New Year, Deepavali, New Year, Pongal and Republic Day. Finally, the producer told me that the movie could be released in April. So, we have come out with Sudesi on March 3."

He emphatically denied that he had done the film with an eye on the polls. "I never make films having elections in mind. It is based on a good story. The director has also done excellent work on screenplay.

"Though it has powerful dialogues, it does not hurt the feelings of any individual or political party. It only appeals to the citizens to redefine their approach to life to shape a good political leader, who can provide good governance."

Vijaykanth has decided against involving himself in films till the elections are over.
