HYDERABAD: The United States has finally decided to open a consulate in Hyderabad, its fourth in India, by October, 2007. The proposal for opening the facility was cleared by the US Government and the Indian Ministry of External Affairs and announced by Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy to coincide with the visit by US President George W. Bush here on Friday. He said the Ministry of External Affairs had given its consent for establishment of the consulate on February 25 itself. Dr. Reddy had vigorously pursued the long-pending proposal. Till a permanent premises came up on a 14-acre site near Gachbowli, the consulate would function from Dilkusha Guesthouse abutting Raj Bhavan at nominal rent. The counters would be manned "mostly by Telugu-speaking people", he said. The consulate would ensure issue of visas and would be a great boon to all those who had to make visits to the US. The office would also deal with commerce and political affairs besides facilitating visits of US dignitaries and business delegations. He expressed hope that Japan, Germany and Canada would also follow suit.
