BANGALORE: The Karnataka State Government Employees' Association has rejected the appeal of Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy and stuck to its decision to strike work on March 9. The association has called for a one-day strike protesting against the failure of the Government to merge 50 per cent of dearness allowance with the basic pay and increase the retirement age from 58 to 60 years as has been done by the Centre. Association president H.N. Seshe Gowda told presspersons here on Friday that government offices, hospitals and schools will not function on Thursday as employees will stay away from work throughout the State. The association demanded that the Government immediately announce 20 per cent interim relief from April 2004, remove disparity in pay and allowances between Union and State government employees, increase the age of retirement from 58 to 60 years and issue new guidelines for transfers and drop the proposal to abolish posts. The association has demanded that the Government take steps to fill vacancies. The employees will be forced to launch an indefinite strike from March 23 if the Government fails to concede their demands, Mr. Seshe Gowda said. Association general secretary L. Byrappa was present.
