Plea for long-term planning, structural reforms

Staff Reporter

Thiruvananthapuram: Participants in a workshop on project formulation for the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) here on Friday stressed the need for long- term planning and drastic structural reforms to avail of external funding for the accelerated development of the capital city.

Adviser to the Government on Urban Renewal Projects Babu Jacob highlighted the need to peg the development of the city to the economic potential offered by the emerging global market.

Mr. Jacob said the management and coordination of projects under the mission posed a major challenge for the government machinery.

Mr. Jacob proposed the creation of a land bank equipped with infrastructural facilities to promote industrial development. He said sewage treatment would be a high priority area for the capital city.

Mayor C.Jayan Babu said the JNNURM would require a coordinated effort involving the Government and the City Corporation. He called for an amendment to the guidelines of the Mission to utilise a portion of the funds for land acquisition.

Deputy Mayor V.Jayaprakash underlined the need to improve the basic infrastructural facilities in the peripheral areas annexed to the city from the neighbouring panchayats.
