Thiruvananthapuram: A five-member armed gang broke into a house in Thumpa and decamped with Rs.1 lakh worth of gold ornaments after threatening the residents at dagger point in the early hours of Friday. The dacoity had occurred at the house of Sree Latha (50) who stayed with her 70-year-old mother, Chandramathi, in the house when the incident happened. Sreelatha's children, both engineers, are working in Bangalore. Her husband had died a few years ago. Sub Inspector, Thumpa, S. Nazzarudeen, said the robbers were wearing masks. Their bodies were covered in black soot. Sreelatha saw five persons standing outside her house around 1.15 a.m. Before she could reach the phone and alert the police, the robbers entered the house by breaking open the front door. The SI said four members of the gang had spoken in Tamil and while one was heard conversing in Malayalam by the residents. A similar dacoity was reported from Mangalapuram police station limits last week.
Youth attacked
A 22-year-old youth was seriously injured in an attack by an armed group at Menemkulam in Kazhakuttam police station limits on Friday afternoon. The police identified the victim as Lijin. An official said Lijin has been admitted to the Medical College Hospital (MCH) with near fatal injuries. The incident occurred around 3.30 p.m. According to Circle Inspector, Kazhakuttam, Muhammad Iqbal, Lijin, who was drunk, was attacked by five youth wielding machetes and swords. A police team rushed Lijin to the Medical College Hospital where he was operated upon by a team of doctors. The CI said the police were investigating a Thumpa-based gang in connection with the incident.
Four held
The Cantonment police have arrested four youth on the charge of assaulting the star of a popular candid camera television show. The police identified the accused as Jayakanth, Aneesh, Vijith and Deepu. The police said the accused were arrested on the basis of a complaint filed by Sabu, a television star who became popular through the programme "Tharikida" aired by a private Malayalam channel. The accused were charged with simple assault. They were later let out on bail.
Body found
The decomposed body of an adult male was fished out of the Kappil lagoon in Varkala police station limits on Friday. The police said the body seemed to be of a 65-year-old man. The body was being kept at the Medical College Hospital mortuary for identification and post mortem examination.
