Pondicherry

Pondicherry: After a meeting with district level functionaries in Pondicherryto elicit their viewson strategies to be adopted in the forthcoming Assembly polls, PCC president P Shanmugham left for Karaikal, (his home town), to carry out a similar exercise. He would submit a report to party president Sonia Gandhi for a final decision on the number of seats the party would be contestingand sharing of seats with alliance partners, including the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam. During his recent visit to Pondicherry, B. K. Hariprasad, AICC general secretary, who is looking after party affairs in Pondicherry, and high command's delegate, made it clear that both Mr. Shanmugham and Chief Minister N. Rangasamy would apprise the high command through a joint report of the ground reality in the Union Territory. The political developments in Tamil Nadu have also come to invigorate parties in Pondicherry. But with the total number of seats in the Union Territory being limited (30), the task of sharing the seats among alliance partners is more arduous for parties here than in bigger State such as Tamil Nadu. Pondicherry and Karaikal with 21 and 6 constituencies would have the poll in the second phase on May 8, while Mahe (with two segments) and Yanam (a lone segment) would have the election in the first phase for the Territorial Assembly on May 3.
