KOCHI: A total of 2,514 units have been sanctioned till the end of February this year in Ernakulam district to be registered under the Prathyasa enterprises development programme.

The State-wide Prathyasa programme aims at launching 25,000 new enterprises all over the State by the end of the current financial year. An official of the District Industries Centre (DIC) said here on Saturday that the target for Ernakulam was 2,500 new enterprises. These units will generate employment opportunities for 10,000 people by the end of this fiscal.

The district has seen 1,646 new enterprises starting operations so far under the scheme. Margin money to the tune of Rs.70 lakhs has been disbursed to 40 new units so far.

Among the new units sanctioned are 1,820 under the Prime Minister's Rozgar Yojana Scheme and 694 under the Prathyasa General Small Scale Industries and Services scheme.

Meanwhile, the local-level entrepreneurs' meets organised by the DIC at the block level have been completed. A DIC official said meets had been held in all the 15 blocks in the district.

The meets were organised with the explicit aim of providing a one-stop shop to entrepreneurs to propose their ideas, examine their viability and meet officials from banks and financing agencies and to interact with representatives of the Kerala State Electricity Board and similar institutions. Officials from local panchayats, voluntary bodies and successful entrepreneurs from the various localities were present to share their experiences. The meets were held on the basis of a comprehensive study conducted by the Department of Applied Economics of the Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat). The DIC official said that responses to the block-level meets were positive and that more than a 100 would-be entrepreneurs attended the meets at each of the blocks.

A district-level programme for entrepreneurs who are willing to invest upwards of Rs.50 lakhs a unit is expected to be held after the State Assembly election.
