Recall legal team: PJR

Special Correspondent

Constitution of team with experienced lawyers from all regions demanded

Hyderabad : Congress MLA P. Janardhan Reddy has demanded recall of the legal team sent to argue the Andhra Pradesh's case before the Krishna Water Tribunal as it had failed to serve the State's interests.

Talking to presspersons here on Saturday, he said the team should be reconstituted with experienced lawyers from the three regions as the issue of surplus waters was crucial to the welfare of the regions. In addition, retired engineers well versed with the issue should be deputed to assist them, he said.

Surplus waters

Mr. Janardhan Reddy said the State had been utilising surplus waters for more than 30 years. Maharashtra and Karnataka were now pressing for an interim order opposing utilisation of the water and construction of projects based on it. If the tribunal ruled in their favour, Andhra Pradesh would suffer irreparable damage, he cautioned.

The cause of separatism would be strengthened if the State were to lose its right over the surplus waters as the Government had already made provision to divert Krishna water from Srisailam through Pothireddipadu Head Regulator to the Rayalaseema region. Apprehensions regarding diversion of assured water from Telangana and Andhra to Rayalaseema were not allayed as no mechanism to define flood waters had been evolved.

Storage in Srisailam

He pointed out that the storage in Srisailam reservoir was 260 tmc out of which 112 tmc was sought to be diverted through Pothireddipadu Head Regulator leaving just 148 tmc, including the dead storage of 90 tmc. Losing the case before the tribunal would further deprive the Telangana region of its share.
