Thiruvananthapuram: Three persons were killed and 25 injured when a Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) Fast Passenger bus bound for Chathannur from the city overturned near Ambalathinkara between Kariavattom and Kazhakuttom on NH 47 on Saturday evening. According to the Rural police, the deceased had been identified as Elias George (56), a resident of Pallithura; Venugopalan (51) of Menamkulam; and Abbas (45) of Mangalapuram. George and Venugopalan, attached to the Kerala Highway Research Institute at Kariavattom, were pedestrians. Abbas, a labourer with a construction firm, was on the bus and was returning home.
14 women injured
Of the 25 persons rushed to the medical college hospital here, 14 were women. The driver of the bus, Anil Kumar (34) hailing from Parippally, is among those under observation in the casualty wing of the hospital. The accident occurred at 6.30 p.m. The bus, which skidded off the road, rammed a roadside tree and overturned. The incident occurred immediately after a light drizzle, which is suspected to have left a film of water, oil and dirt on the road surface. The local people and Fire and Rescue Services personnel who rushed to the spot shifted the injured to the hospital. The Fire and Rescue Services had to use a crane to shift the bus and extricate the bodies which were lying beneath the overturned bus. The police have registered a case.
