KOCHI: With 66 people getting killed in 2005 at 14 major accident spots in Ernakulam rural, the executors of the Kerala State Transport Project (KSTP) are initiating steps to reduce the number of accidents. These fatal accidents were reported on the Aluva-Perumbavoor road (private bus road) and the Vengaloor-Kaloor-Oonnukal road, which total a distance of 37 km. In the 1,299 accidents on the two stretches in 2005, the number of people injured, including those with grievous injuries, stood at 1,296. A consultant with the road safety wing of the KSTP Mohammed Shabeer said that accidents took place at 14 spots on the recently upgraded roads. "We are focusing on areas where the local community too are affected by the accidents. The accident-reduction programme is being carried out by Sherwood Consultants, for the KSTP." Under the KSTP, nearly 1,600 km of roads would be upgraded or maintained under international standards. Thus, apart from smoothening the road surface, they are embellished with ultra-modern retro-reflective signs and raised pavement markers. Apart from ensuring a comfortable ride, the aim is to better road safety. "Under the project, 116 accident-prone locations have been identified and measures are being taken to rectify the problems. Surveys and studies say that with the improvement and widening of roads, there is an increase in the number of accidents due to speeding. Road safety can be attained only if sufficient thrust is given to the three E's - engineering, enforcement and education," says Mr. Shabeer.
