National Safety Day observed

KOCHI: National Safety Day was observed at all the production divisions of FACT on Saturday. Safety day functions were conducted at the company's Udyogamandal Division, Petrochemical Division and Cochin Division. Senior joint director of Factories and Boilers, Ernakulam, K.J. Gopalakrishnan was the chief guest at the function held at the first two divisions.

National seminar

KOCHI: A two-day national seminar on `health, safety and environment' was conducted at Cusat on Friday and Saturday in connection with National Safety Day. It was organised jointly by the Safety and Fire Division of Cusat and the Association of Safety and Fire Engineers. The event was inaugurated by G.M. Reddy, Deputy Chief Controller of Explosives. Scientists from different universities and research organisations presented papers. — Staff Reporter

MACTA Federation office inaugurated

KOCHI: The administrative office of MACTA Federation was inaugurated at Baker House, Pallinada, on Saturday by Labour Minister Babu Divakaran. Minister for Culture A.P. Anil Kumar inaugurated a cultural meeting held later. — Staff Reporter

More security for banks sought

KOCHI: The Canara Bank Staff Union has demanded that adequate security be given to the banks which function during day and night. The demand comes in the wake of the attack on the manager of the Punjab National Bank, Kaloor Branch, a week back. Many banks, including Canara Bank, are set to begin day-and-night banking from March 7, said K.V. George, assistant secretary of the union. — Staff Reporter

Vijaya Bank initiative

KOCHI: The Vijaya Bank has begun 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. banking at its Vytilla branch. This is the bank's first 12-hour branch in the country. The facilities at the branch include core banking, ATM, international Visa debit card facility etc. The service charge will be nominal, bank's regional manager B.A. Ullas Rai said. — Staff Reporter

Protest against attack on registrar

KOCHI: The Ernakulam South NSS Karayogam has protested against the attack on Cusat Registrar A. Ramachandran by the activists of a students' union. At a special meeting on Saturday, the organisation expressed concern at the attempts to defame Mr. Ramachandran and the `violence' on the campus. The Friends Co-ordination of Kerala too has protested against the attack. — Staff Reporter

Awareness programme

KOCHI: The conclusion of this year's road safety awareness programme will be held on March 7 afternoon at the Rajagiri College of Social Sciences.

The college, in association with the Ministry of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways, has been conducting road safety awareness camps and competitions for school and college students, since 2002. — Staff Reporter
