Student commits suicide

NEW DELHI: A Class XII student allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling of his Malviya Nagar house in South Delhi on Friday night. The body was discovered by his parents on Saturday morning.

Abhishek Gautam, son of a retired Jawaharlal Nehru University employee, was studying in Senior Secondary Government School at R.K. Puram, Sector-II, had appeared in the Class XII English paper conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education earlier this week. He was apparently suffering from depression as he had reportedly failed in his Class XII examinations last year and was repeating his papers in the ongoing Board examinations. A suicide note left behind by Abhishek said no one was to be blamed for his taking the extreme step.

Nigerian nationals held for cheating

NEW DELHI: Two Nigerian nationals have been arrested by the South-West Delhi police for allegedly sending e-mails to people promising huge sums of money and cheating them to the tune of several lakhs of rupees. According to the police, an e-mail, in which the sender identified himself as one Captain Liman Saleh from Nigeria, was received by a journalist working for an English news channel this past February. The sender claimed that he was in possession of more than 27 million US dollars and that he wanted to use his account for transferring the money. The sender offered 20 per cent of the entire amount for allowing him to use his account.

The reporter remained in touch with the sender and over a series of e-mails a meeting was fixed at Hotel Hyatt in South-West Delhi this past Thursday. The sender had claimed that two persons, one of them a Nigerian diplomat, would meet the journalist to hand over the money. The journalist was also supposed to pay them handling charges.

As soon as the "deal" as finalised, the police, who had already laid a trap, arrested the two suspectsidentified as Prince Murphy Okeke and Rodney Digi Bobby. Prince was posing as a diplomat, while Rodney posed as a South African national. Kidnapped girl rescued from U.P.

NEW DELHI: A seven-year-old girl kidnapped from Najafgarh in South-West Delhi on February 21 has been rescued from Unnao in Uttar Pradesh. The accused has been arrested. On February 22, Naushad lodged a complaint with the Najafgarh police alleging that one Sri Kishan had abducted his child. Subsequently the police registered a case and took up the probe. They learnt that Sri Kishan had a criminal past and a case under the Arms Act had been registered at the Bangar Mau police station in Unnao. On Thursday, a police team spotted Sri Kishan along with the victim at a bus shelter in Bangar Mau and arrested him. During interrogation, he allegedly revealed that he had kidnapped the girl to extort money from her father.

Bootleggers nabbed

NEW DELHI: Two alleged bootleggers were arrested by the Crime Branch at Samaipur Badli in North-West Delhi on Friday. The police recovered 256 cartons carrying illicit country-made liquor. The accused, Imran and Dharmender, were arrested when they were smuggling the consignment worth Rs. 1.5 lakhs from Faridabad to the Capital in a Tata-709.
