Letters to the Editor
India and the U.S. should be congratulated for signing the civilian nuclear deal. The Indian nuclear programme, which has been nurtured by successive governments irrespective of their political colour, is a symbol of our democracy. The credit should go to the scientists who have worked against all odds. The Hindu deserves special credit for its unbiased and forthright articles on the subject in the run-up to the deal.
S. Sundararaman,
By signing the deal, the U.S. has started weaving its silken web around our foreign relations, diplomacy, and internal policies. We will be slowly enclosed in the web of demands, threats, harsh words, and denial of goods. We are going to be told to move away from the countries that are despised by the superpower. We will be asked to accept Walmart and Kmart, and 100 per cent FDI in all our financial and commercial ventures. We will be asked not to subsidise our agriculture and industry while the U.S. and Europe will continue to subsidise theirs.
Mohammad Imran
The nuclear deal will certainly benefit India a lot. We need energy security to keep up the 8 per cent economic growth. Increasing prices of oil will place huge burdens on the economy. The oil controversy between Russia and Ukraine must act as a wake-up call for us. The deal is welcome.
