Non-cooperation of accused delays trial of Dandupalya gang

Staff Reporter

Trial has not been going on smoothly for the last seven months

BANGALORE: The trial of members of the Dandupalya gang has not been going on smoothly. Highly-placed sources ascribe this to the non-cooperation of the members of the gang, which once terrorised Bangaloreans.

This time the members of the gang are reportedly disrupting the trial, which is being conducted in a special court adjacent to the sprawling open air jail in Parappana Agrahara where the accused are housed.

Sources said the trial has not been going on smoothly for the last seven months mainly due to the misbehaviour of the accused. The prison authorities too have had a tough time in managing the accused.

Some of the accused, it is alleged, refuse to come to the court and on a few occasions have threatened to commit suicide. On an earlier occasion, the authorities complained that the accused could not be managed and that they reportedly "bang" their head against the walls, if they are asked to come to the court.

However, the biggest problem is being faced by the witnesses in the case. A witness who prefers anonymity said: "There is no security for us and we have to travel at least 30 km to reach the jail premises. There are no hotels for us to have lunch in the vicinity of the court and worse, every time we are in the court, we are threatened and abused by the members of the gang."

H.S. Chandramouli, former State Public Prosecutor, says the purpose of setting up a special court is lost if such events continue and if the accused are allowed to behave in such a manner. He says the case should be tried expeditiously and security must be enhanced for the witnesses.
