Aranthangi, Pudukottai schools win awards for AIDS awareness programme

PUDUKOTTAI: The Government Boys Higher Secondary School, Aranthangi and the Sacred Heart Girls Higher Secondary School, Pudukottai were adjudged the best schools for 2004-05 for having implemented the School AIDS Education Programme (SAEP) successfully in their respective institutions.

Both schools were presented awards at a function held here recently in recognition of their activities aimed at creating awareness among the students and teachers on the dreaded disease.

The Collector, P. Sonai, gave away the awards, instituted by the Tamil Nadu State AIDS Control Society and Directorate of Teacher Education Research and Training (DTERT), Chennai.

Along with the award, a purse of Rs. 1,000 was given to the headmasters of both the institutions, a cash award of Rs. 1,000 each to the two teachers of these schools and Rs.500 each to two students of the schools, who underwent the training programme earlier in this connection, and for implementing the programme in a best manner in their respective schools.

The Chennai-based non-profit organisation Y.R. Gaitonde Centre for AIDS Research and Education (YRG - CARE) and the District Institute of Education and Training (DIET), Pudukottai, imparted training to two teachers, two students and headmasters of 173 schools in the district about AIDS, the preventive measures to be taken to check the disease, stigma attached to it, the need to start Red Ribbon Club in schools, etc., during 2004-05.

Among the schools, the Government Boys Higher Secondary School, Aranthangi and the Sacred Heart Higher Secondary School, Pudukottai were selected as best schools for 2004-05 for carrying out various awareness creation activities on AIDS including starting the Red Ribbon Club in their respective institution, official sources said.
